Let me ask you something real quick:
Are you waiting to see two lines before you start thinking about pregnancy, birth, or postpartum life?
If so, you’re not alone, but I want to challenge you to think bigger. What if the best time to prepare for your motherhood journey is before conception? Like, way before?
We Prepare for Everything… Except for Birth?
Think about it:
When you buy a car, you do your research. When you plan a trip, you look at reviews, pack your bags, and maybe even ask for tips. When you choose a college or job, you talk with counselors and weigh all your options.
But for some reason, when it comes to one of THE MOST life-changing events a woman can experience (birth), we often show up unprepared. And it’s not our fault.
Our culture hasn’t encouraged us to prepare for birth the way we prepare for everything else.
But that needs to end now. You don’t have to wait until you’re pregnant (and hormonal, tired, overwhelmed) to start thinking about birth. You can start preparing today.
You’ve Been “Taught” About Birth—But Was It the Truth?
Here’s the thing no one tells you:
You’ve already been learning about birth your whole life… you just didn’t sign up for the class.
Whether it’s through TV, movies, social media, or even your auntie’s birth story from the ’90s – your mind has been shaped by what birth “looks like.” And let’s be real, most of those stories are filled with chaos, pain, and fear.
That’s why it’s so critical to start unlearning the fear-based stuff and learning the truth about what birth can be.
Preparing Early Helps You Build the Birth You Actually Want
When you prepare in advance, before the morning sickness and the midwife vs. OB decisions and the 2 a.m. Google searches… you give yourself the greatest gift: time.
Time to:
- Learn about your options
- Build a birth team that reflects your values
- Understand how your body works
- Heal fears and get clarity
- Protect your peace
Now, believe me, when you protect your peace? That’s when you really start walking in confidence and peace.
My Personal Story: When Preparation Paid Off
I’ve been in the birth world for years: as a nurse, birth coach, and educator. I thought I was good. I had studied, taught classes, and supported families. But when I finally got pregnant, it was during the most difficult time of my life. I was constantly at the hospital supporting my mom.
All those dreamy pregnancy prep plans I had? Completely out the window.
But because I had already laid a foundation, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, I was still able to tap into my values and have a supported pregnancy and a birth I feel proud of. I didn’t know everything (no one ever does), but I knew WHO to ask. And I trusted the Lord to cover what I couldn’t.
What If Thriving Is the Goal?
Too many of us have accepted survival as normal.
In Black culture, we often settle for “as long as the baby’s healthy,” but what if we aimed for thriving? For joy. For spiritual alignment. For postpartum experiences that don’t leave us broken.
You don’t need to know it all, and you’re not behind. But like a big sister would, I’m encouraging you to start now.
Even if you’re single and just dreaming about a baby.
Even if you’re trying to conceive and nervous about if it will ever happen.
Even if you already had one kid and that experience wasn’t what you wanted.
How to Start Preparing (No Matter Where You Are)
Here are a few ways to take your first steps:
✅ Pray. Ask God how He wants you to prepare for your future family.
✅ Tap into your beliefs. Reflect on what you’ve been taught about birth and whether it aligns with truth.
✅ Follow people who educate and empower. You need voices that affirm, not scare you.
✅ Book a consult. Sometimes having someone like me in your corner makes all the difference.
Final Thoughts: It’s Not Too Early, and It’s Not Too Late
I want you to remember this:
Birth is sacred.
Your experience matters.
God cares about every part of your motherhood journey, including how you feel through it.
So let’s not wait until the test is positive to get ready. Let’s start laying the foundation now… so that when the time comes, you’re not scrambling – you’re standing tall, confident, and supported.
